The short version
- Fretrune has no accounts, no ads, and no tracking across other apps or websites.
- Your progress, settings and practice history are stored on your device. If you take the Neck Challenge, its record is also kept in your own iCloud so it follows you between devices.
- The app uses your microphone to hear the notes you play. The audio is analyzed on the device, as you play. It isn’t recorded, saved or sent anywhere.
- If you agree, the app sends anonymous usage data, such as how many notes a practice session answered, to help us improve it. It asks when you first set it up, and you can change your answer any time in Settings. If you don’t agree, it sends nothing. It has no crash reporting.
- We don’t sell your data or share it for advertising.
Who we are
Fretrune is made by Faebriel LLC (“Faebriel”, “we”, “us”), an Illinois limited liability company. You can contact us about privacy at support@faebriel.com.
Data stored on your device
To work, the app saves these on your device:
- Progress: which notes you’ve learned and how well you know each one.
- Practice history: for each session, the notes you were asked for, whether you played each one correctly, how long you took, and when the session and each answer happened.
- Practice time: how much time you’ve spent practicing.
- Settings and setup choices: for example your instrument, fret count, whether spoken prompts are on and whether you share usage data, plus your answers during setup (such as how well you already know the notes).
- An anonymous ID, only if you share usage data (see below).
This data stays in the app’s storage on your device. The app doesn’t send it to us, and we can’t see it. Two things can leave your device: the Neck Challenge record described below, which goes to your own iCloud, and the usage data described below, only if you agree.
Neck Challenge and iCloud
If you buy the Neck Challenge, the app keeps a small record of it: which purchase it belongs to, the notes you’ve brought to Solid while it was running, and when you finished it, if you did. The app copies this record to iCloud key-value storage, under your Apple Account, so the challenge carries across your iPhone and Mac and survives reinstalling the app. Apple stores it; we can’t see it. No other progress is copied to iCloud.
Practice reminders
If you turn on practice reminders, the app schedules them on your device with the system’s notification service. They are created and delivered on your device, not sent from a server, and we don’t learn when or whether you practice.
Microphone
Fretrune asks for permission to use your microphone so it can detect the notes you play. The audio is processed in memory, on your device, while you practice. It isn’t recorded, saved to a file or sent off the device. You can turn off microphone access at any time in your device’s settings. Without it, the app can’t hear you play.
Spoken prompts
If spoken prompts are on, the app reads note names aloud using your device’s built-in speech voice. The text is spoken on your device and isn’t sent to us.
Anonymous usage data (optional)
When you first set up Fretrune, it asks whether you’ll share anonymous usage data. Nothing is sent unless you say yes. You can change your answer at any time in Settings › Share Usage Data.
If you say yes, the app sends short messages about how it’s used to TelemetryDeck (TelemetryDeck GmbH, Augsburg, Germany), an analytics service built for privacy, which processes them for us. Each message contains:
- What happened, such as opening the app, starting or finishing setup, or starting or ending a practice session. A session’s message includes its mode, which part of the neck you were working on, counts like how many notes you answered, and a rough length, such as “1–5 minutes”. For the optional Full Neck upgrade, it also says when the Full Neck screen was opened and whether a purchase, restore or unlock went through.
- Your setup answers from the first-run questions: your instrument, how well you know the notes and whether spoken prompts are on.
- An anonymous ID. It’s a random number the app makes the first time it sends anything. It isn’t based on your device or anything about you, and it’s scrambled (hashed) before it leaves your device. It lets us count how many people use the app, not who they are.
- A random session ID that changes each time the app opens, and the version of the analytics code.
It never includes audio, recordings, the individual notes you play, your name, your email address, your Apple Account, payment details, or anything you type. TelemetryDeck says it doesn’t store IP addresses or use cookies. We use this data only to understand how Fretrune is used and make it better. We don’t use it for advertising, we don’t combine it with other data to identify you, and we don’t sell or share it.
If you turn sharing off, the app stops sending immediately and deletes its anonymous ID. If you turn it on again later, it makes a new one, so the earlier data can’t be linked to you again.
If you email us
Send Feedback in Settings opens a new email in your mail app, addressed to us, with the app’s version, your platform and its version filled in. Nothing is sent unless you send it. When you email support@faebriel.com, we receive your email address and whatever you write. We use it only to answer you, and we keep it no longer than we need to. We don’t add you to any mailing list.
Purchases
Fretrune offers optional in-app purchases: the Neck Challenge and Full Neck. Apple processes the payment. We don’t receive your name, payment details or Apple Account information. The app asks Apple on your device whether a purchase has been made, so it knows which features to unlock. If you share usage data, the app also reports whether a purchase or restore went through (see above), never who you are or how you paid. Apple’s handling of your purchase is covered by Apple’s Privacy Policy.
Backups and moving to a new device
Because your data is stored in the app, it’s included in your device’s normal backups. On iPhone, that means iCloud Backup and backups made on a computer. On a Mac, it means Time Machine. It also moves with you when you transfer to a new device using Apple’s tools. Apple handles these backups under its own privacy policy, and we can’t see them.
What we don’t do
- We don’t sell or rent your data.
- We don’t use your data for advertising, and the app contains no ads.
- We don’t track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
- The app doesn’t ask for your name, email address or contacts.
- We don’t collect crash reports, and we collect usage data only if you agree.
How long we keep data
Data on your device is kept until you reset your data or delete the app.
Usage data you agree to share is stored by TelemetryDeck for us. Because it’s anonymous, we can’t find or delete one person’s messages. Turning sharing off stops anything more from being sent and deletes the app’s anonymous ID, so nothing new can be linked to what was sent before.
Your choices
- Usage data: turn Share Usage Data on or off in Settings at any time. Off means nothing is sent.
- Delete your data: go to Settings › Reset All Data. This deletes your progress, practice history, practice time, settings, setup choices and the anonymous usage ID from your device, and starts over from the welcome screen, which asks about usage data again. It keeps your Neck Challenge record, on the device and in iCloud, because that belongs to a purchase. On iPhone, deleting the app removes the data stored on the device. On a Mac, the app’s data stays in its container until that is removed too. Your in-app purchases are recorded by Apple, not stored by the app, so neither affects them, and you can restore them at any time.
- Microphone: turn off access in your device’s privacy settings.
Depending on where you live (for example, in the EU, the UK or California), you may have rights to access, correct or delete your personal data, or to object to how it’s processed. To use these rights, contact us at support@faebriel.com. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
Fretrune isn’t made for or marketed to children, but anyone can use it. The app has no accounts, doesn’t ask for anyone’s name, email or other contact details, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us at support@faebriel.com and we’ll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date above. If a change significantly affects what the app collects, we’ll say so here before the version of the app that makes the change is released.
